The Malta Gay Rights Movement has expressed concern over the way the Archbishop's Curia is mounting pressure on the government to apply religious instead of secular criteria as regards marriage thus denying a substantial minority in the country of their rights.

Earlier this week, Archbishop Joseph Mercieca spoke out against the introduction of same-sex marriage.

The Church of Rome has every right to impose its doctrines on its members but not to impose them on the rest of society, the movement said.
