Mark Sammut failed to better his personal best in the 200m backstroke at the Youth Olympic Games yesterday.

Swimming in heat one, Sammut posted a time of 2:16.85, over a second slower than his qualifying time of 2:15.47.

The only consolation for the Maltese swimmer was that his time yesterday represented an improvement of two seconds on his result in the 200m backstroke race at the UK National Youth Championships, held two weeks ago.

Sammut finished 12.05 seconds behind Polish swimmer Matuesz Wysoczynski who came first in 2:04.80.

Today, Maltese athletes Marija Sciberras and Tamara Vella will run in the B finals of the 100m hurdles and 100m events while judoka Jeremy Saywell takes on Lithuania’s Kestutis Vitkauskas in the second round of the 66kg category.
