Two years on and the San Andrea School humanitarian experience, A Helping Hand, is still alive and growing.
On January 31, 2002 the first Grade 12 students visited the St Rita Home for children in Tarxien, one of the homes run by the Ursuline Sisters, where 20 children are cared for by dedicated nuns. The students presented the nuns with various gifts, including a cash donation collected by the students at school.
Since that day students from San Andrea School have visited the home in Tarxien regularly to help the children with homeworks. The children of this home have been invited by the head of San Andrea School to come over to the school once a week on Wednesday. A team of teachers, including the PE teachers and a team of students stay after hours to welcome the children and organise various sports activities for them.
The San Andrea Scoop of 2002/2003 made a net profit of Lm230. The committee and members voted to use the profit made to help those in need and once again it was decided to donate Lm100 to the home for children run by the Ursuline Sisters in Sliema.
During Lent a team of students organised a collection for the Sliema Creche. A sum of Lm50, packs of nappies and baby food were collected. Students accompanied by teachers and parents visited the Sliema Home on April 1 and presented the mother superior with the gifts.
One of the aims at San Andrea School is to promote a faith vision that goes beyond the boundaries of religion as a school. Such activities help in integrating and unifying school life under a set of Christian values.
