I wish to clear rumours that have reached me concerning my abrupt yet forced absence at San Andrea School as Head of Early and Middle Years, a post I have held for the past 14 years, and the circumstances surrounding the events.

Primarily, to set the record straight, I would like to assure you that I am in good health.

It was my intention to see the school through a seamless transition of leadership and giving such early notice of my retirement was made in the best interests of the school to ensure that this handover would be properly managed, as it was given to me 14 years ago. Responsibility is ultimately not an on/off switch one simply flicks at a whim.

However, through e-mail correspondence, received from the School Board of Governors, three hours following verbal communication with the chairperson, I was informed that I was not to return to school as from the following day – Thursday, May 3 – to avoid “miscommunication” on the reasons for my resignation. After 14 years of dutiful service and devotion to the school, parents and children, this was the position taken by the school board’s five members who represent the 800 or so families whose children attend the school.

Although a legally available avenue when applying the rights of the employer within employment law, I believe the position taken goes fundamentally against the principles of educational institutions and the school’s ethos of reason, respect and responsibility.

The board was to revert with a final decision on the notice period yet parents and staff were informed of my resignation and that I would not be returning to the school before any formal communication was made to me. I have yet to receive any such communication addressed to me following the said e-mail.

Now, as things stand, I was left with no other option but to set the record straight by stating the facts as they are in the hope that this would put an end to the unfortunate rumours that are circulating.

I would like to thank all friends at school, parents and children who have made the last decade and a half a memorable one. Your trust and respect are greatly appreciated. When we respect ourselves, we are better at respecting others.

I wish you all well and thank you.
