San Filep band club kicks off 175th anniversary celebrations
The programme includes an exhibition of historic musical instruments, scores and documents
The Għaqda Każin Banda San Filep A.D. 1851 of Żebbuġ, Malta, officially opened its 175th anniversary celebrations on January 18.
The programme began with a marċ brijuż in Misraħ San Filep and the surrounding streets, during which marches by former bandmasters of the musical society were performed. These marches will be included in a new album, to be released later this year.
A special thanksgiving mass was then held at St Philip’s parish church, during which the band performed the Missa Brevis by Mro. Richard Bugeja, an original score composed for the occasion, with the participation of soprano Karen Camilleri and tenor Charles Vincenti.
An exhibition titled Instrumental Exhibition: The Instrument and the History of the Wind Band was later inaugurated at the band club’s premises.
The band, led by Mro. Richard Bugeja, performing during mass. The exhibition gives the public the opportunity to see, for the first time, around 30 antique instruments owned by the band club dating back to the 19th century, along with historic musical scores, standards, documents, band uniforms and artefacts from the society’s archive.
It also highlights the historical and cultural value preserved by all Maltese musical societies, and of instruments and band artefacts as part of the collective and national heritage.
