Labour leader Alfred Sant this morning toured the Malta head office of Banif Bank in Gzira and underlined the fact that the government and the opposition had always agreed on the development of the financial services industry.

Banif Bank, which is based in Portugal, set up operations in Malta last year and has just opened a branch in St Julians. Its Malta headquarters are in Gzira.

Dr Sant said a Labour government will set up a commission to map out growth for the financial services industry for the next 15 years. He said this was a sector which changed rapidly, and Malta needed to be flexible enough to be prepared for changes and opportunities.

He said a Labour government would also offer incentives and the proper environment to encourage companies to relocate to Malta and for Maltese working abroad to transfer to Malta.

Replying to questions, he said he did not see a Labour government selling the remaining government stake in Bank of Valletta in the foreseeable future.
