Labour leader Alfred Sant yesterday said the problem of plastic waste in Malta would double or triple if Malta joined the European Union, which had decided that soft drinks in plastic containers should be permitted.

Dr Sant was speaking at the first in a series of discussions with Labour delegates on the party's draft policy on the environment.

He said it was a myth that the EU would solve Malta's environmental problems.

Action and not words or reports were needed for environmental progress, he said, adding that this was only possible with Labour's policies that balanced economic development with the need to take steps to curb the present environmental disaster, in line with the country's resources.
