Labour Party leader Alfred Sant has requested the intervention of the EU's Commissioner for the Environment, Margot Wallstrom, with the Maltese authorities over plans to site two "temporary" landfills in the vicinity of the prehistoric temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra.

Dr Sant also asked Ms Wallstrom to consider an alternative proposal to postpone the closing down of the Maghtab landfill so as to give time for the preparation of the planned engineered landfill.

In his letter, Dr Sant said the Maltese government's decision was clearly in breach of the EU Landfill Directive (1999/31/EC) which stressed the need for the protection of nature and cultural patrimony when selecting an area suitable for landfill use.
