Labour leader Alfred Sant's credibility plummeted deeper as the list of companies which he claimed would suffer as a result of EU membership grew longer, Economic Services Minister Josef Bonnici said yesterday.
"Dr Sant has run out of options and is instead resorting to intimidating finger-pointing and generic predictions of doom and gloom," Prof. Bonnici said.
At last Sunday's MLP mass meeting in Fgura, Dr Sant again read out the names of companies which, according to him, would be affected negatively by membership.
Prof. Bonnici hit back and said that by now, Dr Sant's strategy should be very obvious for all and sundry to see through.
His devious objective was to instil doubt and fear in the minds of workers by naming individual companies.
"What he is trying to do is to give the false impression that he has some insider knowledge about these companies which is being kept secret from the workers concerned," the minister said.
He said that if Dr Sant's concern had been genuine, he could have identified certain alleged problems relative to a given sector or line of manufacturing and expounded on them, instead of targeting individual companies.
