Sant's walkabout in Valletta

Opposition leader Alfred Sant went on a walkabout in Valletta yesterday, visiting a number of business outlets and talking to owners about the initiatives they are taking to attract more customers, and how they see trade developing.

The walkabout started in South Street where the Labour Party leader met top officials of the General Workers Union, led by general secretary Tony Zarb, who greeted him outside the main gate of the union's headquarters.

Accompanied by deputy leader for parliamentary affairs Charles Mangion and several party candidates for the European Parliament elections, Dr Sant then visited shops in Republic Street ending his visits at the Embassy Complex in St Lucia Street.

In a short comment to reporters - which was drowned out by the swinging tunes of Freddie Mizzi's Band which was playing on stage in Great Siege Square nearby as part of the EU accession celebrations - Dr Sant said the visit to the commercial establishments was part of the run-up to the celebrations that the Malta Labour Party has planned to mark May 1, Workers' Day.
