France would be ready to intervene to help Chad's government against rebels if need be, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Tuesday, after the U.N. Security Council urged countries to back the government.

"The French army is not there to fight anyone but there is a legal decision by the Security Council," he told reporters during a visit to western France. "If France has to do its duty, it will. Noone should doubt that."
