Scalp cooling machine donated to Gozo General Hospital
New service and extension of ward to enable more cancer treatment in Gozo
Gozitan cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy can look forward to retaining their hair after a scalp cooling machine was donated to Gozo General Hospital.
This is part of new cancer-related services being offered directly to Gozitan patients treated at Gozo General Hospital including the forthcoming extension of one of the treatment wards which will enable more patients to receive treatment in Gozo without the need to travel to Malta.
The Paxman Scalp Cooling machine was gifted by the Action for Breast Cancer Foundation.
A similar service is already available at Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre in Malta.
The scalp cooling system is specially designed to reduce chemotherapy-induced hair loss, supporting patients’ wellbeing by mitigating some of the emotional burden of the treatment and helping patients maintain a sense of normality throughout their treatment journey.
Health minister Jo Etienne Abela said the machine complements the additional services being offered to Gozitan cancer patients.
Foundation chairperson Esther Sant said she hoped the machine will have a positive impact on patients’ treatment.
