Malta champions Mark Schembri and Lisa Camenzuli are set to improve their game considerably after signing to play in the Italian League for Ragusa club Virtus Vittoria through the initiative of the Malta Tennis Federation.
Schembri, in fact, has already figured in three Italian League matches this month. He did well for Virtus Vittoria, winning 90 per cent of his encounters in singles and doubles.
Camenzuli's first match is scheduled for next Sunday. She will also play in the Ragusa Open which has a total prize money of $10,000.
The top 20 players in Italy play in Category One of the league. Category Two consists of eight groups with players enjoying a 2.1 ranking. Virtus Vittoria are in Category Three, along with 24 other teams, divided into four groups. The top two in each group will contest the promotion play-offs.
The MTF said the move was an important step for local tennis. It opens new doors for Maltese players and provides better opportunities as the national squad is gearing up for the GSSE next June.
