Scheme to restore UCA properties rolled out to harbour region

€9 million has been allocated for the restoration, conservation and maintenance of properties across the harbour area

The Irrestawra Darek (Restore Your Home) scheme, which offers grants to restore facades of buildings in Urban Conservation Areas, has been rolled out for people with property in the harbour region.

A total of €9 million has been allocated for the restoration, conservation and maintenance of properties across the region, which includes Valletta, Vittoriosa, Senglea, Cospicua, Żabbar, Floriana, Kalkara, Tarxien and Pola.

Previous calls for the scheme had been taken up within minutes of opening, so this year, applications are being opened in a staggered process based on region.

A total of €30 million has been allocated for financial assistance to owners, tenants and NGOs to restore and maintain traditional façades and architectural elements in their properties.

So far, the Planning Authority has rolled out the schemes in the western and southern regions. Both became over-subscribed within days of opening.

Some 424 applications have already been submitted for restoration in the western region, 373 for the southern region, and 173 for property in Gozo.

People with property in the harbour area have until April 29 to apply.

The PA will assess applications "strictly" in the order in which they are received.

Eligible applicants may benefit from the following maximum grant thresholds:

  • Up to €15,000 for restoration works on all properties located within Urban Conservation Areas (UCAs)
  • Up to €100,000 for the restoration of Grade 1 scheduled buildings situated within UCAs
  • Up to €50,000 for Grade 2 scheduled buildings within UCAs
