Scholarship helps dancer pursue artistic dream

Victoria Mercieca, a 21-year-old dancer, recently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Professional Dance Performance, specialising in jazz dance, at London Studio Centre. Her studies were supported by a scholarship awarded under the Malta Arts Scholarships Scheme.

The degree offered Mercieca a comprehensive and intensive training programme designed to build strong technical foundations across multiple dance styles, such as jazz, ballet, contemporary and hip-hop. Beyond technique, she also took singing and choreography classes to enhance her performance skills and creative expression.

Mercieca said the programme’s focus on versatility ensures that graduates are well-prepared to adapt to the diverse demands of a professional dance career. During the course she also studied dance science and history, which provided important context and understanding of the art form.

During their final year, each student had the opportunity to tour multiple theatres around the UK, giving them a glimpse of life as touring professionals and helping them develop resilience and confidence in performing under varying conditions and adapting to different venues. All the students also took part in an end-of-year show, providing them with valuable stage experience.

Commenting on her experience, Mercieca said: “Pursuing this degree presented significant challenges, particularly the high costs associated with tuition fees and living expenses in London. I am deeply grateful for the financial support I received from the Malta Arts Scholarships Scheme, which enabled me to fully dedicate myself to my studies without the burden of financial stress. This assistance has been valuable in allowing me to chase my passion and grow as an artist.
