Professor C. Pulè's letter (The Sunday Times, February 12) brought to mind the last years of my teaching career up to 2001.
With my head's blessing I used to invite a guest to speak to my class. We called their frequent visits "Face to face with" as my past pupils literally came face to face with guests from all walks of life.
We met Chiara, il-Budaj, Trevor Zahra, George Peresso, Professor Lanfranco, Tony Terribile, a dentist, a nurse, a nutritionist, Peter A. Caruana, the local council secretary, among others.
However two visits which are still as vivid today as they were then were those by President Emeritus Ugo Mifsud Bonnici and by Mgr Paul Darmanin, Bishop of Garissa in Kenya. To date, whenever I meet past pupils, they recall these visits vividly.
The pupils asked questions and talked freely with their guests; their visits sometimes lasted for more than the hour or so agreed upon. In fact, even the guests themselves were reluctant to leave.
I wish I could show photos taken during their visits as readers could see for themselves that children can be educated in an interacting and different way. Articles by some of my past pupils were carried by The Times' Junior News of those years.
