A 15-year-old boy died yesterday after a fight at a Manchester school and two 14-year-old pupils have been arrested, police said.

Police said no weapons were involved in the incident but did not give any other details about what caused the boy's death.

"It is believed the boy had been in an altercation with another pupil at the school," they said in a statement.

"Police officers will be working closely with the school and parents following this incident."

The boy was injured during a fight at Broadoak Comprehensive School in Partington at midday and died an hour later at Trafford General Hospital.

Four months ago, a 16-year-old boy was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a fellow student in Lincolnshire, eastern England.

That incident shocked Britain and revived memories of another fatal stabbing in 1995 when head teacher Philip Lawrence was killed by a youth outside his London school as he tried to protect a pupil who was being assaulted.

Teaching unions said such incidents were still extremely rare.
