Schoolchildren invited to apply to shipping-themed art competition

The shortlisted students will be invited to an award ceremony in Cyprus this April

Schoolchildren are invited to create art envisaging what a ship might look like in 60 years, as part of a Europe-wide competition.

Students between the ages of nine and 12 are invited to apply, with submissions open to drawings, paintings, sculptures, short videos and other forms of creative expression.

The competition is organised by the European Community Shipowners' Association (ECSA) and supported by the European Commission. Local support is provided by the Malta International Shipowners' Association (MISA).

Students may submit one entry each, with the competition aimed at increasing the visibility of, and student interest in, the maritime sector.

Four submissions from across Europe will be shortlisted, with the winning entry decided by a jury made up of industry representatives and policymakers.

The four shortlisted students, together with their teacher and one parent, will be invited to Cyprus to attend the award ceremony taking place within a meeting of EU Transport ministers on April 26.

A booklet showcasing the shortlisted artworks will also be produced.

MISA said it “fully supports this initiative as part of the industry’s collective efforts to raise awareness of the importance of the maritime sector, while inspiring early interest among younger generations in its role, relevance and career opportunities”.

Entries are open until February 27. Teachers are requested to send photos or other digital photos of the submitted entries, or submit questions about the competition, by email to euschoolcompetition@ecsa.eu.
