Chris Ripard, in the letter Gozitan Driving (Mal)practice, commented on my photo of a man and his dogs on a scooter going up the hill towards Nadur, from the book Gorgeous Gozo and published on the back page of The Times last week.

Mr Ripard got the gist of the photo completely wrong. While on the main road, the scooter was not moving since it was on the side of the road. The man on the scooter had just been cutting olives (another photo in the book) from an olive tree right next to that road. The hard hat was being worn to protect him from falling branches and the olives themselves. I asked him not to put on his motorcycle helmet as he was still parked, so that his face would not be hidden in the photograph.

With regard to the dogs, they definitely can behave better as passengers than most humans!
