The Armed Forces of Malta were last night involved in a search and rescue operation to the south of Malta after a distress call was made from a boat claimed to be carrying migrants, sources said.

The boat was reported to be some 180 miles off the Libyan coast with 80 people on board, but this could not be confirmed last night.

Between last Thursday and Friday, 67 migrants were rescued in two separate operations and brought to Malta.
