The golfing season has started and with it the Fenston Cup, one of the most popular mixed events on the calendar.

There are six teams this year all sponsored by different firms, namely, Winnie Cassar (Cassar & Cooper), John and Margaret Holland (Sapori), Mario Balzan Demajo (Pedigree), Helga Ellul (Playmobil), William Beck (Beck Graphics) and Margaret Parnis England's team (Bio-diesel).

There was an extremely good turn-out for the first round, which took place recently.

Never has the course looked better.

The fairways and smooth greens are now a joy to play on and the members who have had to sacrifice many long months of inconvenience have been finally rewarded with an end result which can only be described as a triumph for new greenkeeper Roger Bott, the committee and chairman of the club Paul Stoner.

The Fenston Cup was started ten years ago and from the outset has been a very popular event. This year it was decided to introduce a slightly altered format.

In the new round robin format, the first round saw Cassar & Cooper drawn versus Pedigree, Bio-diesel against Playmobil and Beck Graphics vs Sapori.

Pedigree, Bio-diesel and Beck Graphics all got off to a brilliant start, winning the first round and gaining three points each (three points are awarded for a win and one for a draw).

The next rounds will see different teams facing one another until the last round when a general stableford will be played. With five more rounds to go there should be many twists and turns along the way to keep everyone's interest alive.

The best score of the day belonged to Tony Vella with 40 points.
