Chelsea Supporters Club - Malta (CSCM) will be hosting the second Emirates Airline Young Footballer Challenge 2003 at the Centenary Stadium on Saturday, May 31.

During the event's launching, held recently, CSCM officials gave details to local nurseries. The competition is open to individual young footballers (born in 1990 and 1991).

The inaugural Challenge last year was won by Matthew Schembri, a Sliema Wanderers FC Youth Nursery product. The runner-up was Malcolm Vella, of Kercem Ajax Youth Nursery.

Emirates are the official sponsors of Chelsea FC. The deal, worth £24 million, runs until 2004/5.

Malta was among the first to benefit from this sponsorship scheme through the launch of Emirates Airline Young Footballer Challenge 2002. The concept of this activity was developed in Malta by CSCM in collaboration with the Dubai-based international airline.

CSCM president, Joe Anastasi, explained that the Challenge provides an opportunity for young aspiring footballers to test their skills individually rather than in a team.

"The Challenge is designed to develop individual talent of the young 10 to 12-year-olds registered with nursery clubs in Malta and Gozo," he said.

"Chelsea FC have, once again, extended their support for the Young Footballer Challenge 2003. They intend to send another official from the Youth Training Academy to assist the adjudicating panel."

CSCM official and Challenge co-ordinator Chris Micallef gave details of the competition.

It will cover three techniques on which young players will be tested. Each nursery will be asked to select two top players who will be asked to master the techniques according to set minimum standard regulations at their respective nursery.

Closing date for entries is April 30. Certificates will be presented to all participants. Those requesting more details may contact Mr Anastasi on 21-383423.
