Alfred Farrugia (The Sunday Times, January 24) asks why the new adventure park at Ta' Qali had to be built on the old runway. By way of a possible answer he may wish to consider the following.
The new embassy being built by the Americans stands at the far end of the old runway and this poses a security risk. A rogue aircraft loaded with high explosives can easily land and crash into the embassy.
In my view, it was decided to destroy the runway completely. First, a garden in front of the National Park was dreamed up. Now, a garden in front of a park is totally uncalled for, particularly for a cash-strapped government. This so-called garden, which stands bang on the runway, is all masonry and steel girders and few plants. It serves admirably to block any oncoming aircraft.
Next comes the new adventure park, built in collaboration with the US government and Bank of Valletta, which also helps in this respect. A strange story? Possibly.
