I refer to the letter North and South (August 12) which on one hand praises the project as "the bastions came out in their full glory" while on the other hand it states that the project is "shoddy" due to the treatment given at the end of the bastion wall.
The original intention was to leave untreated the far end of the bastion wall where one can still see the scar from the last world war when part of this bastion was destroyed. However during the course of the works it was found this could not be left untreated, as there were serious structural problems as a result of the seeping in of rainwater. The ruins were not whitewashed but simply consolidated to arrest further deterioration and structural damage to the whole bastion wall.
It is our intention to consider what can be done to treat this scar from the last war. The decision can only be taken after we are informed from the Waterfront consortium responsible for the Macina building their intentions with regards to the rather recent building that was attached to the Macina and which is exactly below the area of the bastion in question.
