Home Affairs shadow minister Beppe Fenech Adami has written to the Police Commissioner to formally ask him to investigate the Gaffarena scandal and the Castille connection.

He said that unless an investigation was embarked upon, the Opposition would take all actions possible according to law.

Addressing a news conference outside the police headquarters, Dr Fenech Adami said the formal call was being made following weeks of calls by the Nationalist Party in the media asking the police to investigate the scandal.

Dr Fenech Adami said that the National Audit Officer report on the scandal highlighted enough points which should lead to a criminal investigation by the police.

The letter sent to the Commissioner, he said, highlighted at least 14 points which the police should look into and investigate.

Dr Fenech Adami also pointed out that the Auditor General clearly said that the deals between the government and Gaffarena could breach the Criminal Code but he did not have the mandate to investigate.

He said that the day after the report was published, a number of police officers were sent to the Lands Department giving the impression that the criminal investigation had been embarked upon. The Opposition had asked the Commissioner to wider the investigation to Castille because it was clear that that was where the scandal had been planned.

However, it was uncovered by the Times of Malta last week that the police had not yet started investigating the allegations being made in the report.
