Malta imported 50% more power from the interconnector last year

Electricity supplied to users rose by 6.5%, use of the interconnector was up 49.7%

Electricity supplied to users amounted to 3,106.1 GWh last year, an increase of 6.5 per cent when compared to 2023, official figures issued on Wednesday show.

The data by the National Statistics Office also shows that  970.4 GWh were imported through the interconnector, an increase of 49.7 per cent from the previous year.

The annual average demand for electricity was 478 MW, an increase of 1.8 per cent when compared to 2023. GHG emissions from fuel combustion in power plant sources decreased by 7.8 per cent over the situation in 2023.

During 2024, the electricity supply in Malta comprised of net generation from power plants 58.1%; net imports 31.1% and renewable sources 10.8%.

Electricity production from power plants registered a decrease of 8.7 per cent when compared to previous year amounting to 1,849.9 GWh. Energy harvesting from renewable sources registered an increase of 5.6 per cent, reaching 336.0 GWh in 2024. Most of the renewable energy (97.2 per cent) was produced from photovoltaic panels.

During 2024, 970.4 GWh were imported through the interconnector, registering an increase of 49.7 per cent when compared to the previous year.

August had the highest amount of electricity supplied during 2024 - 360.7 GWh - with a share of 11.6 per cent. This was followed by July (338.2 GWh) having a share of 10.9 per cent from the amount of electricity supplied.

July and September saw the highest electricity demand, registering 593 MW and 592 MW respectively during 2024.  

In 2024, GHG emissions from fuel combustion in power plant sources decreased by 7.8 per cent over the situation in 2023.
