A 22-year-old woman was killed in Mġarr at 2.25pm, after she apparently opened a car door while her friend was driving on Triq Binġemma.

Jess Micallef, a fire rescue volunteer with the St John rescue corps, fell out of the car being driven by the 24-year-old from Żabbar and died of her injuries.

And another motorcyclist was killed in an accident on the Coast Road, just a day after a 44-year-old - Giulio Baldacchino, from Mellieħa - died along the same stretch of road.

Police confirmed that the 36-year-old man from Fgura - identified later on Facebook as Daryl Aloisio - lost control of his motorcycle at 2.25pm, crashing into a barrier and was taken to hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Seven people have died on the Maltese roads since the beginning of the year. In 2016 there were 22 fatalities, while in the January-September period of 2017, 17 people were killed on the roads.
