In the past 10 years or so, we who visit the theatre in Malta have been extremely fortunate. The long overdue liberal outlook of our stage censors has meant that we have been able to see stuff that was previously barred to us.

For example, I can't imagine that censors in the past would have permitted the mildly controversial drama Paul to be staged locally. Or indeed Mark Ravenhill's Some Explicit Polaroids. That particular production contained one or two scenes that were, to put it mildly... explicit. And now we are to be treated to Mercury Fur, a play by Phillip Ridley that, in some ways, pushes the envelope even further.

All three plays mentioned have one thing in common, they have all been produced by the Unifaun Theatre Company. In many ways Mercury Fur may be the strongest of all. It is the fifth stage play by Mr Ridley and undoubtedly his most controversial yet. This drama revolves around an apocalyptic situation including the planned sacrifice of a child in a "snuff" ceremony. Unifaun's production stars Irene Christ as the Duchess and it also contains the talents of Tony Attard, Jan Zammit, Joseph Nwobodo, Edward Caruana Galizia, Mik Pisani, Chris Galea and Barry Stott. Chris Gatt directs.

Mercury Fur opens tonight at the MITP Theatre in St Christopher Street, Valletta and runs for this and next weekend.

You can obtain tickets for this production from the St James booking office. Just a thought en passant: This might be one to discourage Nannu and Nanna from attending.
