The Malta Model Boating Association kicked off its activities after the summer yesterday with a regatta near Manoel Island bridge.

Five remote controlled model sailing boats were entered for the event, competing in 10 races over a 200m course. Association treasurer Albert Micallef was overall winner, followed by Robert de Leonardo and Alan Desira.

Mr Micallef said he built his one-metre boat himself to a British design using a mould and fibreglass. He also produced the sails. The boat has two controls, one for the rudder and the other for the winch to control the sails.

Mr Micallef said that although remote control aircraft were more popular, interest in model remote control boats was growing and the association could expect more participants for its activities as winter set in.

The association was set up 12 years ago and in 1999 hosted the world championships in Malta.
