The Viset Malta chief executive, Chris Falzon said he did not see how the proposed shuttle service between Pinto Wharf and Valletta for cruise liner tourists would threaten the livelihood of taxi drivers since it would cater for tourists' different needs.
Mr Falzon said taxi drivers had to understand that there were thousands of passengers on a cruise ship and while some opted to take a taxi to the city, others preferred to walk, go on an excursion or would take the shuttle service.
"We have to provide all these options for the tourist to be able to choose," he said.
Mr Falzon was asked to comment on the taxi drivers' complaint about the Malta Transport Authority's announcement that it was in talks with Viset on the introduction of a shuttle service.
The drivers feel so strongly about the issue that this week they will be presenting a petition to parliament against the proposal.
Mr Falzon said there was fierce competition among the 90 or so ports in the Mediterranean and every port and city was working to ensure they provided the best facilities.
"In addition to having the white taxis and shuttle service there should also be a proper bus service and eventually there should be a lift to Valletta and a cable car - tourists should have a choice," he said.
