Sicilian folk group I Terrazzani di Trabia won the first edition of the Malta International Folk Festival, organised by M & E Management Group late last month at the Community Chest Fund tent in Freedom Square.

Taking part were groups from countries as diverse as Malta, Sicily, Italy, Serbia Montenegro, Moldova, Bulgaria and Hungary. The groups were competing for €8,500 worth of prize money and 10 trophies, including for best costume, best music and best choreography.

I Kersoneso D'Oro, also from Sicily, won a song contest which formed part of the folk festival.

The organisers plan to get even more groups for the second edition of the festival next year.

Two folk groups representing the governments of Congo and Senegal were unfortunately refused visas for this year's festival, the organisers said.
