Siggiewi mayor Karol Aquilina in a statement today regretted comments reportedly made by the mayor of the Sicilian town of Vittoria that he saw no reason to maintain a twinning ageement with Siggiewi.

Giuseppe Nicosia made his comments in an angry reaction after an Italian fishing boat was escorted to Grand Harbour after it was found fishing illegally in Maltese waters. The skipper was taken to court and fined 20,000 euros after filing a guilty plea.

Dr Aquilina said he would be contacting his Sicilian counterpart and he hoped the existing relationship would be maintained.
