Guzè Delia Primary School, Siggiewi, is the first school in Malta to organise a Walking Bus - an initiative which is already taking place in different countries around Europe and Australia (for further detials one can log on to www.walkingbus.com or www.walkingbus. org).

A group of pupils walk from home to school safely every morning under the guidance of adult supervisors, mainly parents.

This initiative gives children the chance of being active on a daily basis, provides them with road safety education, gives them the opportunity to socialise and diminishes the air pollution and traffic management/parking problems in the school area.

The main partners in this project are the Malta Sports Council, the Health Promotion Department, the Commissioner for Children and obviously Guzè Delia School, with its administration, council, parents and other volunteers.

The Walking Bus began on a trial basis on May 2 on one route, only in the mornings. Seventeen children took part on that day, and by May 5 this bus had around 50 participants.

The Walking Bus project is being officially launched on Thursday morning.
