Siggiewi unauthorised quarries sealed off

The Malta Environment and Planning Authority has sealed off a number of quarries around Siggiewi after they were found to be either functioning without a permit, were being used for illegal dumping or as scrapyards.

The authority said the machinery used for the cutting of stone in an unauthorised quarry was sealed off by means of security locks while a four-course boundary wall was put up barring access in two quarries where illegal dumping was taking place.

MEPA said it removed 40 vehicles from an unauthorised quarry that was being used illegally as a scrapyard.

Authority officials closed down an unauthorised mechanic in Fgura who had changed the use of his private garage into a workshop.

Administrative Law Enforcement police assisted MEPA officials in their operations.

MEPA said it intended to continue with its efforts to close down unauthorised quarries and remove illegal development.
