One of Malta's eminent jurists Sir Adriano Dingli is featured on the latest commemorative silver coin issued by the Central Bank of Malta.
The coin, which is the third in a series recalling distinguished personalities, sells at Lm15. It has a diameter of 38.61mm and weighs 28.28g. Two thousand will be minted in all.
The first coin of the batch featuring Sir Adriano was yesterday presented to President Guido de Marco by Central Bank governor Michael Bonello at the Palace, in Valletta.
During the presentation, Prof. de Marco, himself an eminent lawyer and chairman of the Commission for the Administration of Justice, said Sir Adriano and the jurist's father were the only instance in Malta's juridical history of both father and son holding the post of chief justice.
The President added that when he was Minister of Justice it was his intention to have the halls at the law courts named after distinguished jurists.
The coin issue marks the 103rd year since the death of Sir Adriano, who was born in Valletta on October 8, 1817.
After the presentation, Chief Justice Vincent Degaetano, chairman of the Currency Advisory Board, read out a short biography of Sir Adriano.
In 1862, Sir Adriano was in Turin to negotiate an extradition treaty with Italy. During his tenure of the Office of Crown Advocate, he drafted and promulgated Malta's civil laws in codified form.
He died on November 25, 1900. A monument in his honour at the Mall, in Floriana was unveiled by King Edward VII in 1907.
The two other personalities featured in this coin series were former prime minister Enrico Mizzi and composer Nicolò Isouard.
Members of the Currency Advisory Board also attended the ceremony at the Palace.
The coin, which comes packed in an imitation leather case, may be bought from the counter of the coins distribution centre at the Central Bank, Castille Place, in Valletta or via the bank's website.
