The national archery team competing in the Small Nations Tournament in Luxembourg, was on a high yesterday as the Maltese archers claimed a silver medal in the team compound event.
John Pace, Philip Camilleri, Joe Ellul Sullivan and Dion Buhagiar were in top form as they clinched the silver medal, just missing out on gold medal to winners Liechtenstein by just two points.
In the individual competition, John Pace lost his semi-final tie by one point. However, the seasoned athlete won the bronze medal by defeating his Cypriot opponent. In the women's recurve event, Maria Formosa missed out on bronze as she was beaten to fourth place by a Cypriot athlete. A total of seven countries took part in this year's event.
There was further good news from the Maltese clan as Kevin Bonnici registered a personal best of 294 points in the men's recurve division. Bonnici is now only nine points away from the national record in this division.
The Maltese contingent led by coach John Schembri and Dr Raphael Patiniott as team manager is expected back in Malta tomorrow morning.
