This year's U-19 badminton championships were played recently at St Martin's College, Swatar.

Having taken the runner-up berth in last year's edition, Adrian Chetcuti faced Avner Vella in the boys' singles final.

On his way to the final, Chetcuti eliminated Ralph Agius Fernandez and Samuel Cali while Vella had the better of Sean Mifsud and Jan Cutajar. In the final, Chetcuti beat Vella 15-7 15-8 and claimed the title.

Vella made up for this upset in the doubles where he was partnered by Cali. In the final, they beat the more fancied Edmund De Giovanni/Adrian Chetcuti over three sets - 15-11 3-15 17-14.

The girls' singles event saw last year's finalists facing each other once again. Champion Maria Borg defeated Mathilde Friggieri and Yvette Zarb on her way to the final whereas Fiorella Farrugia ousted Maria Mizzi and Jahel Briffa.

In the final, Borg retained her title with a sound 11-3 11-1 win.

The two then partnered each other in the doubles, beating Jeanella Grech/Mathilde Friggieri 15-1 15-0 to retain the title.

The Junior Championships continue on Sunday with the U-15 and U-13 singles and doubles events.
