The joint committee for the north, embracing six local councils, has agreed to run a pooling system for the enforcement of regulations in their localities.

These are Gharghur, Mgarr, Mellieha, Mosta, Naxxar and St Paul's Bay.

The agreement will become effective on September 1.

St Paul's Bay council said the system guaranteed solidarity between the local councils as money derived from enforcement of regulations would be channelled to one fund.

The council said the fund would cover expenses involved for enforcement. Councils which may end up with profit would share the money with other councils which may incur losses.

The council said the pooling system was expected to coordinate enforcement in the six localities with greater flexibility. The system was expected to give better results in the enforcement of infringements which normally occur in rural zones, the council said.

The inter-council agreement was signed last Monday by the mayors of the respective councils at the St Paul's Bay local council.
