Sixty-five players in junior tennis competition

The Gordon Asciak Tennis School, backed by EuroSport and situated at Marsa SC, recently organised a junior tournament for its members. The competition, sponsored by the United Group, agents for Opel and Saab in Malta, had an entry of over 65 players.

Players were placed in groups according to their level of play. This made the tournament a success as most of the matches were balanced and the standard of play was definitely an improvement on previous showings.

One could easily detect some talented youngsters who will definitely become valid players in future.

The Gordon Asciak Tennis School has already produced some of Malta's top players, such as Luke Bonello, Tanya Camilleri and Matthew Asciak.

Most of the winners and runners-up in the Christmas tournament at Marsa are either school products or train regularly at the school.

With the aim of keeping the upward trend going, the school now intends to organise another trip to Palermo during the Easter holidays.

Winners and runners-up:

Mini-tennis: 1. Kyra Fenech Azzopardi; 2. Michela Fleri Soler.

Advanced mini-tennis: 1. Paul Jaccarini, Hannah Scicluna; 2. Malcolm Gatt Baldacchino, Jessica Tortell.

Boys singles: (Group A) 1. Clayton Zammit; 2. Anthony Bonnici. (Group B) 1. Matthew Ward; 2. Daniel Gatt.

Girls singles: 1. Nicola Pugliesevich; 2. Debbie Mangion.

Prizes for best effort and improvement were presented to John Calleja and Thomas Abela.
