Many have rejoiced that the Maltese language has been accepted as an official EU language. One of the reasons for their joy is that now the Maltese language will not be lost, as they seem to have been fearing

It seems that these people are living in hibernation; they do not read the Maltese press, posters and the like; they do not listen to radio stations and/or watch TV channels in Maltese. Otherwise they would have realised that the our language has long been lost.

With the liberalisation of the air waves all sorts of people are being allowed to air their voices and write in the press, irrespective of their level of education - in many cases their political creed is their most important credential.

And to add insult to injury these are not the only people, or else they must have influenced the majority, to slaughter our language. One hears some of the highest authorities, judges, MPs, lawyers, lecturers and so-called intellectuals, who corrupt, twist and massacre the language.

Misuse of words, mismatching adjectives with nouns, genders and the like are just a few examples. That infamous word gewwa (in English 'inside') is so blatantly used. So one says "gewwa Malta minn gewwa l-Ingilterra" and so many other asinine expressions.

Some even go to the extent of introducing new pronunciations like sikjatra for psikjatra as if it were in English with a silent 'p'. It seems that they feel important and above the others, which unfortunately for them, they are not any better, if anything.
