Sliema Band holds anniversary concert

Ġieħ is-Soċjetà award presented to society honorary president Lino Chircop

As part of the celebrations marking the anniversary of its foundation in May 1923, the Sliema Philharmonic Society, in collaboration with the Sliema local council, organised a vocal and musical concert at the society’s club premises last month.

The concert was performed by the Banda Ċittadina Sliema under the direction of musical director Lesley Tabone, together with the popular trio JVF – Jessica Muscat, Victorio Gauci and Fabrizio Faniello.

Among others, Faniello performed his popular songs I Do and Sal-Aħħar Nifs; Muscat performed A Thousand Years, by Christina Perri and David Hodges, and Sena Ilu Bħal Daż-Żmien, by the group New Courey; while Gauci performed the popular song Xemx, as well as Fuq iż-Żuntier ma’ Enzo, a medley of well-known songs.

The singers then together performed their Malta Eurovision Song entry Festa: No Time for Siesta.

The Sliema Band also performed several well-known musical pieces, including Pearl Harbour by Hans Zimmer; At the Movies, a selection of film themes by John Williams; and the popular piece Golden from the Netflix film KPop Demon Hunters.

Afterwards, certificates of proficiency were presented to local band members and students attending musical tuition at the Mro Cardenio Botti School of Music within the Sliema Philharmonic Society.

The Mro Cardenio Botti Trophy went to ‘Bandsman of the Year’ Hayden Falzon.

Two further recognitions were presented to Charles Formosa and Gino Coleiro in appreciation of their continuous work and dedication towards the club and the society throughout the years.

At the end of the evening, the president of the society, on behalf of the committee and the society, presented the annual honour of Ġieħ is-Soċjetà to Lino Chircop, honorary president of the society, in recognition of his dedication and contribution towards the society over the years.

The president of the society, Jesmond Vella, concluded the evening with a message of thanks to all those present and to everyone who contributed towards the success of the event.

The band concluded the concert with the performance of the Sliema Anthem composed by Botti.
