Sliema's Qui Si Sana beach closed due to sewage leak
Local council says leak caused by 'severe' damage to pipe
Qui Si Sana beach in Sliema has been temporarily closed due to a sewage leak, the town's local council announced on Friday.
The council said the leak was caused by "severe damage" to a sewage pipe by a roadworks contractor, adding that the Water Services Corporation was currently on site carrying out necessary repairs as quickly as possible.
"Until the repairs are completed and the relevant authorities confirm that the water is once again safe for bathing, we kindly urge the public to respect the temporary closure and refrain from swimming in the area," the council said.
"The council is closely monitoring the situation together with the WSC and the relevant authorities and will provide further updates as soon as they become available.
The closure follows several others this summer due to sewage leaks.
Last week, Il-Bajja tal-Għażżenin in St Paul’s Bay, commonly known as Is-Simenta, was declared unsafe for bathing after sewage overflowed into the sea. Environmental health officers were still investigating the source of the contamination at the time.
Earlier in June, swimmers were also warned not to bathe at Dawret il-Qalb Imqaddsa in Birżebbuġa after sewage contamination was reported in the area. That warning was lifted after repeated seawater sampling. Balluta Bay was also temporarily closed after construction debris, including stone blocks and other waste, blocked a secondary sewer line, causing a sewage overflow.
A popular swimming spot in Ta’ Xbiex was also temporarily closed after the Environmental Health Directorate warned bathers to avoid the area due to an “overflow of foul water”. The area later reopened, although authorities said investigations were ongoing to identify a permanent solution to the issue.
