A total of 1,261 occupational injuries were reported to the Department of Social Security in the second quarter, the National Statistics Office said.

It said 1,125 of the injuries involved men and 136 women.

In the same period last year, a total of 1,301 people - 1,170 men and 131 women - were injured at work. The average age of the claimants for injury benefit is 37, the NSO said.

Over 35 per cent of the injuries occurred in the manufacturing sector, including the shipyards, and nearly 13 per cent in the construction sector.
