Smart City Malta is the first local township development to register for 'Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design' certification.

LEED, developed by the US Green Building Council is a programme for assessing sustainable building design, construction and operation. LEED certified buildings maximise the use of key resources more efficiently to create healthier work and living environments.

From inception, Smart City had announced plans to adopt globally-benchmarked green practices throughout its global network of self-sustained business townships.

Smart City Malta's 'green' buildings will contribute to an overall reduction in waste and pollution; these buildings adapt well to local site conditions which makes them flexible and suitable for long-term functionality. This efficient performance has a positive effect on Smart City Malta's carbon footprint, by reducing carbon dioxide emissions generated by daily building operations.

Smart City Malta has already been registered with the Green Building Certification Institute GBCI, which handles the accreditation process on behalf of USGBC. This first phase of the LEED process has been completed with the support of a sustainability team led by Bovis Lend Lease Malta.

As project managers for Smart City Malta, BLL Malta has also carried out the general prerequisite on site to attain the necessary credit for LEED certification. BLL Malta has also developed the scope of services for the LEED assessment, consulting, modelling and commissioning of all services to be provided in the first Smart City Malta building, SCM 01.

The construction of the first Smart City Malta building in Phase One, is currently underway. It will consist of 12,000 square metres of ready-to-use Grade A offices and is expected to be completed and handed over to the first business partners by 2010. Smart City Malta will also encapsulate shopping boulevards and residential areas.
