SYMPATHY WALK

The Junior School of the Convent of the Sacred Heart in St Julians will be holding a walk today in support of the Malta End-to-End Challenge, a fund-raising walk from Cirkewwa to Marsaxlokk to support the Maltese Red Cross in tsunami-hit Sri Lanka.

The sympathy walk is the result of an initiative by Stephen Teager, a parent of a child attending the school, who intends walking from Cirkewwa to Marsaxlokk on February 5 in aid of the cause.

ECMT post

David Sutton, deputy chief executive of the Malta Transport Authority, has been elected chairman of the Road Transport Group of the European Conference of Ministers of Transport (ECMT). Mr Sutton was elected unanimously by representatives of 43 countries during a meeting held in Paris. Malta was represented at the meeting by Vincent Cassar, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry for Urban Development and Roads.

Heavy Traffic Ban

Due to the road construction works being carried out in conjunction with the Fifth Italian Protocol along part of Triq San Tumas, Luqa only light vehicles are being allowed through Triq Guzeppi Ellul towards Triq il-Kunsill ta' l-Ewropa, Luqa.

Heavy vehicles are to seek alternative routes through Aldo Moro Road, Marsa. Public transport will not be affected.

Vehicle missing

A white Suzuki Super Carry van bearing the registration FBC 678 was reported stolen from L-Ibrag on Tuesday night. Anyone spotting the vehicle is asked to phone 9949 3829.

Rules on euro-like tokens

The Central Bank said that Regulations (EC) No 2182/2004 and No 2183/2004, which have just been adopted by the Council of the European Union, lay down that medals and tokens having visual characteristics, size or metal properties that are similar to euro coins should not be sold, produced, imported or distributed for the purpose of sale or for other commercial purposes.

This prohibition is applicable in all EU member states in the following circumstances:

When the terms "euro" or "euro cent" or the euro symbol appear on their surface; when their size is within the limits specified by the regulations themselves; when any design appearing on the surface of medals and tokens is similar to any of the national obverse designs or to the common reverse face of euro coins, or is identical or similar to the edge design of the two-euro coin.

Forum On Sick

The Commission for the Sick and Disabled within the Malta Catholic Action will be holding a forum dealing with issues relating to the sick at the Mgr Dandria Hall, Catholic Institute, Floriana on February 4 at 6 p.m.

Thanksgiving Mass

The Voluntary Lay Mission Organisation will be holding a thanksgiving Mass on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of its foundation at St Publius church, Floriana on February 19 at 6.30 p.m.

Roads closed

The Commissioner for Children, Sonia Camilleri, will give a talk to the students of G. F. Abela Junior College today at 11 a.m. about the rights of children and young people.
