Appreciation - Peter Paul Camilleri

Horace Mercieca writes:

The onset of Peter's sudden and debilitating illness shocked and bewildered the wide circle of his friends. Although in full cognizance of his serious condition, he never went out of circulation. In fact, he continued to the end to frequent his usual favourite haunts in his beloved village of Nadur, spreading mirth and happiness all around. He never hesitated to talk, in his typical light-hearted manner, about his impending and premature departure from this world. It was as if he were talking about one of his many trips to the US, the adopted home of his four sons.

I have known Peter since my early teens. We played football together and taught at the village primary school. When in a group, Peter's relaxed personality and humorous disposition won him many friends and admirers. One occasion is indelibly etched in my memory: It was in the early 1960s. During those times, it was common practice in Gozo to refer to fellow villagers by their nicknames. We were having the mid-day break at our village school. We were standing in a circle around our newly appointed Maltese head-teacher in the middle of the playground. The head-teacher was complaining that it irked him a lot to have parents referring to the teachers by their nicknames. Here Peter chuckled in his irresistible and exuberant manner that the head-teacher should feel proud of having a whole zoo on his staff. In fact, he pointed out to the surprised head-teacher, he himself was known as Tal-Kokka, J. Said as Tat-Tigiega, P. Buttigieg as Tal-Kelba, C. Attard as Ta' l-Ghammiel and J. Buttigieg as Ta' L-Ghattuqa. An explosion of laughter echoed around the playground and we all went back to our classes in a light and happy mood.

Peter led a very active life in his native village after retiring from his teaching profession. For many years, he was the president of Nadur Youngsters FC and he also found time to write and publish the history of his beloved football club. He was also a member of the Mnarja Band Club and served the society in various capacities. He also had a very good pen. His contributions to the parish quarterly magazine Luminaria were very popular indeed. In them, he explored the folklore, lives and doings of his compatriots.

Peter is gone. We will not see him any more cycling around the streets of the village. However, the memories we have of him, especially of his spontaneous and disarming smile, will live on in our memories.

Bon Voyage, Pete.
