Obituary
SALIBA - On August 30, GIOVANNI (John), at Penrith Hospital (NSW Australia) passed peacefully away comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss, his adoring wife Connie, nee' Mizzi, his beloved sons Charlie, Samuel, Patrick and Stanley and their spouses, his brothers Joseph C. and his wife Mary, Harry and his wife Trixie and David and his wife Mary, his sisters Rose and her husband Thomas Pace of Sydney, Tessie, wife of J.P. Vella, Imelda, his in-laws, Georgina widow of brother Sonny, Betty, widow of brother Eddie, together with Johnnie, Roger and Victor Mizzi and wives, Maggie and husband Edgar Azzopardi, Helen, widow of Vivian Micallef, Marie and husband George Camilleri, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends in Malta and Australia. May the Lord grant him eternal rest. A prayer is solicited.

First Aid courses
The Malta Red Cross Society will be holding courses in basic first aid in the coming months, in both Maltese and English.
On September 13, 18, 20 and 22, courses will be held in Maltese between 9.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. and between 5.30 - 9 p.m.
Registration will be accepted at The Malta Red Cross Society headquarters, 104/5, St. Ursula Street, Valletta, in the mornings. The fee is Lm10 per person.
All courses are recognised locally according to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, First Aid Regulations of 2002. The certificates also carry European certification under the European Red Cross Standards on First Aid.

Conferences
The Discalced Carmelite Fathers are holding two conferences at the Teresian Spirituality Centre at the Madonna tal-Karmnu Hall, Valley Road, Birkirkara on September 10 and 17 at 7.30 p.m. Rev. Essay competition
Bank of Valletta has announced an international essay competition organised by the European Savings Banks Group (ESBG) and open to all graduates at Masters and PhD degree levels.
The work may tackle any aspect of the evolution of European savings banks systems or of savings in the community in general. Specific attention to the historical aspects will be an asset.
The winning essay will be awarded up to €5,000 and will be published and presented to senior members of the European savings bank industry during the next European Symposium on Savings Banks History in 2006.
The first and second runners-up will be awarded €2,500 and €1,500 respectively.
Candidates must submit their manuscript in English and in two formats, hard copy and as an electronic MS word file by not later than September 15 to their respective national coordinator.

Rock Aid
The Razzett tal-Hbiberija will be holding a rock concert, called Rock Aid, in its car park on September 12.
All the profits generated will go towards the multisensory project which is currently underway at a cost of Lm150,000.
Scar, Sigo, Dripht, Handstand, Lord Adder, Bitterside, Hiddensun, The Myth, Stilair and Subculture are among the bands taking the stage.
The concert starts at 3 p.m. and ends at 11 p.m.

Bells blessing
A set of bells will be blessed on Sunday in the main square of St Therese Sanctuary, in Birkirkara after the 6.30 p.m. Mass. The bells were manufactured by Taylor Bellfounders, UK and will be placed in the new belfry together with the three bells which were in the old belfry of St Alphonsius church, now Mt Carmel Hall.
