RN Frigate Visit

The Royal Navy frigate, HMS Kent, will pay an informal visit to Malta between today and Monday.

She is under Commander Simon Hardern.

The ship will not be open to the public during her stay.

Salzburg seminar applications

The American Centre is receiving applications for the 2004 Salzburg seminar. It will fund the cost of the grant, which covers tuition and per diem. The applicant will be responsible for paying round-trip travel to and from Salzburg, Austria.

Applicants should be individuals with strong academic backgrounds who have demonstrated a level of professional achievement and expertise in the fields covered by the session for which they apply.

The American Centre will fund three candidates, and is accepting applications for the five sessions below: Ethics in News Reporting and Editing - February 18-25, 2004 (closing date December 17); Strengthening Democracy and Governance: Women and Political Power - April 26-May 3, 2004 (January 31); Reinventing The West: Redefining The Transatlantic Relationship - July 14-21, 2004 (January 31); Changing Concepts of International Educational Mobility - August 15-20, 2004 (January 31, 2004); and Libraries in the 21st century - October 23-30, 2004 (January 31).

Valletta Band Marches

The National Folklore Commission is organising a programme of band marches in Valletta between December 17-22.

The marches will start at Freedom Square and pass along Melita, Merchants, St John and Republic streets, starting at 6 p.m. on weekdays, and at 5.30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

The bands taking part are: De Rohan (Zebbug); St Michael (Zabbar); Socjetà Muzikali Santa Marija (Dingli); Socjetà Muzikali Santa Katerina VM (Zurrieq); Socjetà Filarmonika Sliema (Sliema) and Peace Band Club (Naxxar).

The Armed Forces Band and the Police Band will also be performing in Freedom Square between December 15-24.

Limited edition watch

A limited Racing edition of the Speedmaster Day-Date model of the Omega Speedmaster watch is now available in Malta, celebrating Michael Schumacher's fifth world championship.

English Language Courses

The Royal British Legion, supported by the British Council, will be conducting English language courses for Maltese students in Malta and Gozo, for years III to VI and forms I to V on Monday afternoons in Gozo, and Wednesday and Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings in Valletta.

Table tennis marathon

The Zabbar youth section of the Catholic Action will be holding the Malta Table Tennis Marathon in aid of the Malta Hospice Movement, starting on Friday at 8.30 p.m. at the Notre Dame Hall in Zabbar.

Telephone directory

Maltacom has contracted Newsworks Ltd, a local publishing house based in San Gwann, to print and distribute the 2004 edition of the telephone directory.

Newsworks was appointed following a public call for tenders and the company has undertaken to print and distribute the new directory by the end of April, 2004. It also intends to sell advertising space in the telephone directory.

Newsworks has nominated two sub-contractors: Elanders Ltd of Sweden will be responsible for the printing and JP Advertising will be selling advertising in the directory.

Maltacom is currently updating directory entries by means of directory entry verification forms being sent by post to all fixed line subscribers.

New Councillor

David Vella was elected councillor in Marsascala in the casual election held yesterday at the Electoral Office, in Valletta. He was the only nominee for the vacancy created by the resignation of Christopher Agius (MLP).
