Appreciation - Philip Attard Montalto
Chev. Joseph C. Sammut writes:
Dr Philip Attard Montalto LL.D. was born on March 22, 1935. He was educated at St Edward's College where he was awarded the "Old Edwardian Prize" for the "Best Allrounder". He later obtained a senior diploma in Italian from the university for foreigners at Perugia in 1954. He graduated Doctor of Laws at the University of Malta in 1961.
He married the Noble Marie, eldest daughter of Count Alfred Anthony Sant Fournier and Eileen née Donavan on February 2, 1958.
He was chairman and managing director of several companies such as B. Tagliaferro & Sons Ltd, P.A.M. Ltd, Attard Estates Ltd, Tagliaferro Centre Ltd, Europa Centre Ltd, five Effs Cold Stores Ltd and Cabor Ltd. He was a director of Tagliaferro Bank Ltd from 1963 to 1973 and of the National Bank of Malta from 1970 to 1973.
In July 1987 he became a Knight of Magistral Grace in the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. He was elected president of the Maltese Association of SMOM on July 24, 2000 and promoted to Knight Grand Cross of Magistral Grace on April 1, 2002. Dr Philip passed away to a better life in the Lord on November 13, 2003.
Apart from his family his main interest was the fostering of the ideals and aims of the Order of St John - Tuitio Fidei (Defence of Faith) and Obsequium pauperum (Service to the Poor). Along with a former president of the Maltese Association SMOM, Roger de Giorgio and the Most Noble Comm. Baron Igino Trapani Galea Feriol, Philip was responsible for securing the provision of funds as well as the building of Casa Lanfreducci in Victory Square, Valletta, now the headquarters of the Maltese Association and which eventually became his second home.
Philip had a sharp intellect, utter professional integrity, a keen sense of humour and was delightful company on all occasions. His advice was, above all, always given so sincerely and freely. And that was Philip blessed with generosity, a characteristic often lacking in our modern stress-filled and hectic world.
Philip's funeral at the Cathedral in Mdina on November 15 evinced a palpable testimony of his friends' esteem. It was a moving service and few would doubt that he was there in spirit. He would have been gratified by the attendance of so many of his friends and colleagues, not least President Guido de Marco and Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami. Indeed a higher turn-out is hard to imagine.
I extend my sincere sympathy to Philip's family and relatives and to all his friends and colleagues in the Maltese Association of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta for the loss of a very special person.
