Appreciation - Wenzu Vella
by Lino Farrugia, FKNK secretary
Wenzu Vella, as also known, "Wenzu ta' Bormla", was one of the founders and the second president of the then National Association of Hunters and Trappers - Malta, now called The Federation for Hunting and Conservation - Malta (FKNK) in the early 1970s.
Wenzu passed away on April 27 at the height of spring and during the peak of game migration so cherished by all local sportsmen and Wenzu alike. Wenzu was also a pioneer when he represented Malta in clay pigeon shooting events.
In the early 1970s, Wenzu was always to be found on the forefront in defence of the local traditions of hunting and trapping which, already at the time, were seriously threatened. Today, we are here, so united with the federation thanks to Wenzu and a few other individuals who were then with him. Today once again the traditions are being very seriously threatened and even though Wenzu is not present with us in person his spirit lives on inside us and that, in turn, makes us stronger.
In a moving, and probably unique farewell, FKNK officials, both present and past, together with other hunters and clay pigeon shooters, as well as relatives of Wenzu, carried their "broken" shotguns as they stood by the side of Wenzu's coffin when it was being carried into and out of the church.
In the name of all Maltese and Gozitan hunters and trappers we salute Wenzu.
Our condolences to his family.
